Turing House offers a wide range of sporting, musical, creative and other options. Most clubs run from 3.15pm - 4.15pm, although some activities operate at lunchtime or before school. We encourage all of our students to participate, though we are aware that many already have heavy commitments outside of school that may prevent them from being able to do so.
Unless otherwise specified, all clubs are for both boys and girls. The programme of activities varies seasonally, and evolves from year to year, taking students' interests into account. Students should check the school noticeboard for the latest clubs timetable, and updates are also published in our school newsletter.
- STEM:
Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects are vitally important to the 21st century economy and job opportunities for young people. STEM education develops critical thinkers, encouraging students to be curious, ask questions, and make connections as to why the world exists as it does. It equips students with skills and competencies they will use in future life, even if they don't pursue a career in STEM, such as problem solving, innovation, logical thinking and collaboration.
As well as offering after-school STEM clubs, we have participated in national initiatives such as the EEP Robotics Challenge, Salters Science Festival, the National Cipher Challenge, the Ultimate STEM Challenge, the UKMT Maths Challenge, Maths in Motion, the Space to Earth Challenge and more.
- Music:
In addition to our core music curriculum which explores a wide variety of genres, we provide students with regular opportunities to engage with music as part of our extra-curricular programme. We normally hold an instrumental taster day at the start of Year 7, in collaboration with Richmond Music Trust (RMT), on which students are introduced to a wide selection of instruments and have the chance to try them out. Take-up of music lessons at Turing House is high, both inside and outside of school. We have an orchestra, choirs, band, and music technology club, and some older students are managing small ensemble groups themselves. We normally have at least two concerts a year - at Christmas and in the Summer term - and, when possible, lunchtime musical sessions at a local community centre. We also participate in annual RMT orchestral and choral events.
- Sport:
Our aim is to equip all of our students to live a balanced, healthy adult life. We are proud of our students' very high level of participation in sport. Our extra-curricular clubs, and inter-form and inter-school competitions provide many opportunities for them to get involved, and their achievements are proudly celebrated in school assemblies, and in our weekly newsletters.
Unfortunately, we do not permit visitors for sporting fixtures onto our school site for safeguarding reasons. Although it is a great opportunity to watch your child in a fixture, we hope you understand that our priority is the safety of our students. Occasionally we do relax this rule for specific games in the school calendar, These tend to be cup finals etc. In these cases, specific arrangements are made and additional staff are deployed to ensure student safety.
- Performing & Creative Arts:
One of our annual highlights is our whole school play, which showcases performers, technicians, and artists from across our student community. Our 2022 performance of Matilda will be the first in our very own theatre! Other performances in recent years have included Beauty & the Beast, Seussical the Musical and The Witches.
- School Trips:
Although most school trips were cancelled during the Covid-19 pandemic, we are now beginning to offer them again. Our Year 7 students normally attend a Thames Young Mariners activity day and a Bushcraft trip. Other year groups have had opportunities to visit Bletchley Park, the National Space Centre, a local tapas restaurant, theatre trips, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and much more. Trips abroad in previous years have included Paris and Iceland, and in 2023 we will have our first skiing trip to Austria!
- Community Service:
All students are encouraged to have some involvement in community service during their time at school. School fundraising activities are often led by our School Council, who also represent students' interests to the school's Leadership Team and Governing Body. We offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme to students in Year 10 and above, and have a volunteering scheme in Sixth Form.
