Volunteering

Volunteering is an important part of being a well-rounded student in the Sixth Form.  At Turing House, we pride ourselves on being a fully integrated school, and that includes building in opportunities for our Sixth Form students to give back, support and inspire our younger year groups, as well as offering support to our wider local community. (It also looks great on CVs and personal statements too!)

volunteering in school Award (visa)

Volunteering is an important part of being a well-rounded student in the Sixth Form.  This can be extremely rewarding for you but also very beneficial for the individuals and organisations you are working with.

From Term 2, all students in Year 12 work to complete the VISA programme. This is an opportunity for students to enter the classroom space to offer support or run small group work with lower school students. Students opt to work in subjects of their choice where they can offer a different approach to learning, share tips that they have learnt themselves in recent years. By being in the classroom in a teaching capacity, not only does this help to embed subject knowledge, but it also offers students a great opportunity to exercise transferable skills such as those of leadership, time management and effective communication, as well as gaining a great sense of reward and satisfaction. Students are encouraged to complete a minimum of ten hours volunteer work throughout the year.

student mentoring

As part of the VISA programme, some students may opt to support younger students in a mentoring capacity. This may focus on building self-esteem, friendship issues or simply role modelling, however, in other instances Sixth Formers may be able to offer academic mentoring support in specific subject areas. This collaborative approach sits at the heart of our Sixth Form and our school; the support and care that our students provide for each other demonstrates the close-knit community that we have established.

Volunteering in the community

Over the years, we have created strong links within our local community, especially with local primary schools Bishop Perrin and St Mary's and St Peter's. Sixth Form students, along with Year 11 prefects, attend the primary schools to provide reading and mathematics support to young students embarking on their SATs.
