PSHCE Overview
Curriculum

Term 1: Managing GCSE pressures: time, revision and mental health

In this unit, students will experiment with different revision techniques and memory games. Student will consider the different pressures they may face during their GCSE's and they will learn about different coping strategies.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Compulsory
Something that you must do by Law.

Leaving age
The legal age at which you can leave school or education.

Pathway
The education and/or career route that you choose to take.

A-level
Advanced level study and a possibly post 16 option

Apprenticeship
Training that involves both time at College and placements in the work place

Term 2: Personal Finances

In this unit, students will explore how to manage finances both during further education and in later life. Students will learn about credit cards, debit cards, overdrafts, income tax, National Insurance and budgeting. Students will understand the causes and effects of debt, including homelessness.

Students will also develop an understanding of the risks associated with gambling and on-line gaming.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Finance
Related to money

Mortgage
A large sum of money borrowed from a lender to pay for a house or flat and paid back over many years (usually with interest). Money is paid back monthly.

Loan
An amount of money borrowed from a money lender e.g. bank and paid back with interest.

Budget
Budget is a finance plan that allocates future personal income towards expenses, savings and debt repayment

Interest
An amount of money paid alongside the repayments of a loan - this is a charge for the loan and how banks make some of their money.

Debt
A sum of money that is due or owed.

Gambling
Playing games of chance for money; bet.

Term 3: British Values and Democracy

In this unit, students will further develop their knowledge of British Values and how they influence our society today. Students will focus specifically on democracy and they will also develop their knowledge of non-democratic society. Students will explore the role of religion in British society and they will develop their understanding of the value of a multicultural and multi faith society.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Suffragettes
Women who campaigned to gain the vote.

Tolerance
The ability or willingness to tolerate the existence of opinions or behaviour that we as an individual or as a group in society (e.g. a religion) dislike or disagree with.

Democracy
When people vote for their leader. Britain is a democratic country.

Criminal justice system
The organisations in the UK collectively responsible for dealing with criminal activity.

Constitutional monarchy
When a country has a royal family, but these are figureheads or celebrities that don't play an active role in government.

Term 4: Global responsibility

In this unit students will explore our roles and responsibilities with regard to looking after our planet and the world around us. We will investigate what role the UN and other international organisations play, as well as discussing topics such as animal rights, the plastic problem, global warming and aid to other countries.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Current Affairs
Events of political or social interest and importance happening in the world at the present time.

Awareness
Knowledge or perception of a situation or fact.

Global responsibility
It is the belief and practice of acting with the common good in mind, especially for the benefit of all societies. It involves being aware of the interconnectivity and interdependency of the world, and recognising the need for change.

Term 5: Pregnancy, Parenting and Families

In this unit, students will develop their understanding of different family units and dynamics. Students will learn the facts around pregnancy and options. Students will explore different situations, including case studies and will discuss their opinions.

Students will also learn about parenting skills. This will be linked to financial awareness.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Miscarriage
The spontaneous or unplanned expulsion of a foetus from the womb before it is able to survive independently.

Infertility
The inability to conceive children

Menstruation
The process in a women of discharging blood and other material from the lining of the uterus, normally once a month.

Oestrogen
One of the hormones which helps to regulate and maintain a healthy reproductive system in women.

Pro Life
In opposition to abortion and euthanasia

Abortion
The termination of a pregnancy

Pro Choice
Supporting the legal right of a woman to choose whether or not she will have an abortion.

Contraception
The different items couples can use to avoid unwanted pregnancy.

STIs
Sexually transmitted infections caught and passed by people who have unsafe sex

Term 6: Personal Safety and RSE

In this unit, students will continue broadening their knowledge of sex education and about the risks and safety precautions when having a night out. They will learn in more detail the risks associated with technology, with a focus on on like grooming and child sexual exploitation.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Consent
Permission for something to happen or agreement to do something

Rape
Having sex with someone without consent

Sexual assault
Anything physical sexually leading up to sex without consent

Sexual Harrassment
Making unwanted sexual advances or obscene remarks towards others

Chem Sex
Having sex whilst under the influence of stimulant drugs, sometimes involving several participants.

Body image
A person's perception of the aesthetics or sexual attractiveness of his or her own body.

Objectification
Degrading someone to the status of an object.

Revenge Porn
A revealing, naked or pornographic image which is circulated without the consent of the person in the image or video, usually with malicious or vindictive intent.
