PSHCE Overview
Curriculum

Term 1: Transitions and Healthy Lifestyles

In this unit students will discuss the change in moving into their secondary school. Students will discuss worries, friendships, support and the types of things that they can do to settle into our community. Students will explore situations in which they will require resilience and perseverance, both at Secondary school and in the wider community. In this topic, students will be given the opportunity to explore all aspects of healthy lifestyles, including physical fitness, nutrition, emotional well-being and oral hygiene. Students will explore the consequences to health related decisions, and consider ways of achieving positive emotional well-being. Students will be reminded of the importance of road safety.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Personal

To be anxious or uneasy, especially about something uncertain or potentially dangerous

The management of the resources (particularly financial) of a community, country, person.

Change
The process by which something becomes different

Community
A social group of any size whose members live in a specific place, share a government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.

Term 2: Aspirations and Goal Setting

In this topic, students will be given the opportunity to explore different paths taken after secondary school and explore their own aspirations and goals. We will look at teamwork, self-management, anxiety and our well-being. A key focus of this unit is getting to know our own wants and desires for our futures, exploring what we define as being successful.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Mental Health
This is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community

Aspirations
A hope or ambition of achieving something.

Goal setting
Deciding what you want to achieve and going after it.

Problem Solving
The process of finding solutions to difficult or complex issues.

Teamwork
The combined action of a group to solve a problem or issue.

Self-Management
The ability to regulate your behaviours, thoughts and emotions in a productive way.

Employability
Being seen as suitable for a specific job or role.

Term 3: Global Responsibility

In this unit students will explore our roles and responsibilities with regard to looking after our planet and the world around us. We will investigate what role the UN and other international organisations play, as well as discussing topics such as animal rights, the plastic problem, global warming and aid to other countries.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

When businesses or other organisations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale.

International
Existing between different nations or countries.

The UN
An organsation with the purpose of maintaining international peace and security and developing friendly relations amongst nations.

Pollution
The presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance which has harmful or poisonous effects

Animal welfare
The physical and psychological wellbeing of animals.

Term 4: E-safety, grooming and bullying

In this unit, students will develop their understanding of e-safety. They will learn strategies to keep themselves safe while using the internet, with a specific focus on the use modern technology. Students will learn their understanding of grooming including; early signs of grooming, how to respond to this and how best to stay safe on-line. Students will explore the differences between bullying and banter.

Term 5: Puberty and Relationships (RSE)

Students will examine the changes that they will go through during puberty, both physical and emotional and also look at healthy relationships. Students will be taught about Female Genital Mutilation, which will include the law, warning signs and sign posting for advice and guidance both inside and outside of school.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Law

Term 6: Decision Making, Alcohol and Tobacco Education

Students will develop their understanding of alcohol, tobacco, energy drinks and vaping. They will explore the risks, law and give due consideration to the potential impact of peer pressure. Students will be given the opportunity to consider strategies to say 'no'.

Tobacco
Nicotine rich leaves or an American plant, which are often used to smoke.

Nicotine
A toxic and addictive liquid found in tobacco.

Addiction
Not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it could be harmful to you.

Vaping
The action or practice of inhaling and exhaling the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device.
