Spanish Overview
Curriculum

Term 1: Mis Vacaciones

Students will be talking about past holidays, covering the following: using the preterite of –ir; saying what you did on holidays; using the preterite of the regular –ar verbs; describing the last day on holiday; using the preterite of –er and –ir verbs; making sentences interesting; using present and preterite together. There will also be a cultural focus this term on festivals in Spain.

Writing - students to write a postcard style text on a recent holiday in the preterit tense but also including detail in the present and future tenses.

Term 2: Todo sobre mi vida

In this unit pupils will revise the present tense to talk about how they use their phones and what type of music and TV shows they like. They will learn to use comparatives and tackle authentic texts, learning about young people’s lives. They will be aiming to use the past and present tenses together by the end of this unit.

Listening - students will listen to a variety of Spanish speakers and answer a range of comprehension questions.

Reading- students will complete an end-of-module reading test which will be peer-assessed in class.

Term 3: A comer

In this unit, students will learn to say what food they like whilst using a wider range of opinions. They will describe meal times and successfully use negative structures. They will have the opportunity to order a meal and discuss what to buy for a party, using the near future. They will also learn about food in Spanish-speaking countries.

Writing - students will write about their food and drink preferences, using 3 tenses and giving opinions.

Term 4: ¿Qué hacemos?

In this unit, students will be learning the language to arrange to go out, make plans and give excuses. They will learn reflexive verbs and clothing vocabulary. They will also have the opportunity to talk about sporting events and a day out. Students will be aiming to use the past, present and future tenses together.

Listening - students will listen to a range of audio types and answer comprehension questions - some multiple choice, some tick box and some 'answer in English' questions.

Term 5: Operacion Verano

In this unit, students will describe holiday destinations and activities. They will tackle challenging authentic texts, be able to give directions and talk about different accommodation types. They will also learn more about using the three tenses together and use the superlative.

Writing - students will have five questions to choose from to answer in the form of an extended text; they must choose three questions to respond to.

Speaking - students will be asked three questions from a possible list of ten.

Term 6: Repaso

Students will revise all topics covered since the start of Year 8 by revising one topic each week. Students will continue using three tenses with every topic. Topics include: holidays, food, my mobile, arranging to go out.

Reading and listening - students will complete an end-of-year assessment testing their reading and listening skills.
