Sport Overview
Curriculum

Unit 3: Sports organisation and development

In this unit learners will gain an understanding of the organisations involved in sport in the UK, their roles and responsibilities and how they work together. Students will also gain an understanding of sports development, including the organisations involved, who sports development is targeted at and why, how sports development is carried out and how the success of sports development initiatives can be measured.

This unit involves 60 GLH (Guided Learning Hours)

This unit is externally assessed through a written examination paper, worth a maximum of 60 marks and 1 hour in duration.

Develop the individual:
This unit aims to develop learners' understanding of their roles and responsibilities when in an organisational or developmental role.

Create a supportive community:
This unit aims to develop learner's understanding of how sport is organised and developed with the community in mind.

Unit 2 : Sports coaching and activity leadership

This unit will give learners an understanding behind the theory of what makes good sports coaches and activity leaders and methods that can be employed to improve the performance of participants. Students will explore the roles and responsibilities of coaches and leaders, and how these differ from each other and others involved in delivering and teaching sport and physical activity. The main part of the unit is related to developing the skills and understanding necessary to effectively plan and deliver a series of sports or activity sessions reflecting on learners' own practice and using this feedback to improve their performance as a sports coach or activity leader.

This unit involves 90 GLH (Guided Learning Hours)

This unit is internally assessed through a combination of written assignments and practical leadership with a minimum of 6 sports or activity sessions being coached/led which each last for 30 minutes minimum.

Autocratic leadership
Autocratic leadership is the concentration of decision-making and power in only one person who takes little or no input from others.

Democratic leadership
Democratic leadership, also known as participative leadership or shared leadership, is a leadership style in which members of the group participate in the decision-making process.

Laissez-faire leadership
Laissez-faire leaders have an attitude of trust and reliance on their employees. They don't micromanage or get too involved, they don't give too much instruction or guidance. Instead laissez-faire leaders let their employees use their creativity, resource

SMART goals
SMART goals stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

Introvert leadership
Introvert leaders think deeply about team goals and challenges to come up with thoughtful solutions and ideas. Introverts in leadership roles usually let others shine and acknowledge them for accomplishments

Extrovert leadership
Extroverted leaders typically excel at social connections and advocating strongly for their ideas and visions; introverted leaders excel at skills such as thoughtful analysis, listening and reflecting.

Gross motor skill
Gross motor skills require large muscle movement (e.g. shot putt is gross)

Fine motor skill
Fine motor skills require small or intricate muscle movement (e.g. a shot in snooker is fine)

Develop the individual:
This unit develops the learners understanding of the roles and responsibilities of coaches and activity leaders in helping themselves and others keep healthy and active. Learners will come to appreciate the work put in to coaching or leading.

Create a supportive community:
This unit develops the learners understanding of the roles and responsibilities of coaches and activity leaders in helping to keep other fit and healthy.

Unit 18: Practical skills in sport and physical activities

This unit gives learners the opportunity to participate in a number of different sports and outdoor and adventurous activities which allows them to experience first-hand situations that participants who they may later be coaching or leading will come across. In this unit students will learn how to apply skills, tactics, techniques and knowledge in individual sports, team sports and outdoor and adventurous activities which will allow them to participate effectively, safely and enjoyably.

This unit involved 60 GLH (Guided Learning Hours)

This unit is internally assessed and involves the learners to apply skills and knowledge in an individual and team sport setting, in an outdoor and adventurous activity setting and be able to officiate a sport or physical activity.

Adaptability
Adaptability is the quality of being able to adjust to new conditions, being able to learn from experience, and change tactics or skills to become more effective.

Creativity in sport
Tactical creativity is defined at the behavioral level as the unusualness, innovativeness, statistical rareness, or even uniqueness of solutions to a related sport situation in team ball sports.

Decision making
Decision-making describes the individual capability to select functional actions to solve a given issue or to achieve a specific task goal from a given number of possibilities.

Develop the individual:
This unit develops an individual's own enjoyment and creativity while performing in an individual and team sport, and while participating in an outdoor and adventurous activity. Learners will also build on their skills as an official in a sport.

Create a supportive community:
This unit aims to develop an individual's ability in several areas of sport and physical activity, with the aim of developing their knowledge which they will eventually feed back to the community.
