About Free Schools

In common with many councils across the country, Richmond Council is encouraging all of its existing schools to convert to Academy status. All of Richmond's community secondaries are now Academies, which means that they are funded directly by Government rather than by the Local Authority.

Following recent legislation, all new community schools must now be Free Schools, which are a type of Academy.

The Free School legislation allows proposing groups, which must be non-profit trusts, to set up schools that are tailored to local demand. Turing House will receive the same level of funding as other local secondaries and we will work in partnership with the Local Authority to ensure that our school makes a positive contribution to the local family of schools.

More information about Government policy in relation to Academies and Free schools can be found here.
