Spanish Overview
Curriculum

Term 1: Evolución de la Sociedad Española/La cultura en el mundo del habla española

Students will look at two sub themes this term:

Los cambios de la estructura familiar.

Students will look at the different types of family that exist in modern Spain today, the different attitudes to marriage that exist in Spain and the different situations that may threaten family environments.

El impacto turístico en España.

Students will learn about the changes of tourism, paying special attention to the last 50 years including the relationship between tourism and the environment, and the economic benefits of tourism in Spain.

Develop the individual:
Students will discuss different types of family in the UK and Spain and reflect on how times have changed in terms of number of children and marriage/divorce rates.

Create a supportive community:

Term 2: Film: El Laberinto del Fauno/Evolución de la Sociedad Española

Students will begin their film study on El Laberinto del Fauno by Guillermo Del Torro.

They will also study the topic of El mundo laboral:

Students will learn about the current situation of young people in Spain, job opportunities for young within the different sectors of the Spanish economy, as well as the positive and negative aspects of jobs in Spain, especially gender (in)equality.

Unit 2 and the Film: Reading listening, speaking and a short piece of writing about the film

Develop the individual:
Students discuss the inequality of women and work, and compare differences internationally in the Spanish speaking world.

Term 3: Film: El Laberinto del Fauno Analysis / La cultura en el mundo del habla española

Students will continue to study the film: El Laberinto del Fauno by Guillermo Del Torro

Students will also study the topic of La música:

Students will learn about the influence of singers and musicians and changes in music styles, some aspects of Spanish guitar music, the impact of the tango on popular culture and some Spanish and Latin American dances and their impact on popular music.

Unit 4 and the Film: Reading listening, speaking and a short piece of writing about the film

Develop the individual:
Students learn about the different film styles and the creative imagination of Del Toro. They also discuss different styles of music and contemporary art.

Term 4: La cultura en el mundo del habla española

Students will look at two sub themes this term:

Los medios de comunicación:

Students will study the impact of TV in general, including soap operas, the present and future situation of the Spanish press and its impact on the digital age and the impact of social networks.

El papel de las costumbres y las tradiciones.

Students will study aspects of customs relating to food, some non-religious festivals that are celebrated in Spain and in Latin America. They will also study aspects of Latin American gastronomy and one traditional fiesta in Latin America along with some religious festivals in Spain.

Units 5 and 6: Reading, listening, speaking and translation

Develop the individual:
Students discuss the role of the press and argue for and against different styles, and their role and influence in society today.

Create a supportive community:

Term 5: La inmigración y la sociedad multicultural española/ Book: Como Agua Para Chocolate

Students will study the topic: El impacto positivo de la inmigración en la sociedad española.

They will learn about immigration in Spain, from its origins to the present day, the needs of the job market in Spain and the importance of immigration, the Moorish influence on Spain particularly on its cuisine and the arts.

They will also begin their literary text: Como Agua Para Chocolate.

2022 - Students will also continue with the topic of Los medios de comunicación, along with revising all modules covered this year.

Develop the individual:
Students discuss the different values, cultures and benefits that immigrants bring to Spain.

Create a supportive community:

Term 6: Research project introduction - book: Como Agua Para Chocolate

Students will begin the Year 13 topic: Los desafíos de la inmigración y de la integración en España.

They will study the impact of immigration on schools in local communities, the housing conditions of immigrants in Spain along with the marginalization and alienation that immigrants suffer.

They will continue with the literary text: Como Agua Para Chocolate and have an introduction into what their research project should look like.
